AS media homework half term (Abby)

Use of camera;
Throughout our finished piece of work we prove we can hold the camera steady, especially at 18 seconds in when the camera starts to pan around the main characters face and remains steady for the whole shot. We have showed we can frame a shot appropriately by using showing clearly our focus of the shot, for example at 35 seconds in we use a close up to show the knife dripping with blood, this is used to scare the audience and so nothing else is in focus at that point, to help frame our shots better we could of used the rule of three more often, by having the character at one side of the shot instead of in the middle. We used a variety of shot types throughout the piece, for example at 35 seconds in we use a close up to show the knife but at 47 seconds in we use a mid shot to show one of the characters using the knife. We show a good use of composition techniques in the way the shots flow together, from being on one side of the door looking over the shoulder to being on the other side of the door watching the character walk in.

Use of editing;
Our finished piece of work shows that we can use continuity editing well because all the shots flow together without jumps or gaps. To improve this we could film more footage then we need because then we can always cut the shots down where as if we don't have enough footage we can't make some up. We have showed we can use appropriate editing transitions because at 23 seconds in we use a fade out and fade in to transition between walking through the door and being in the corridor. We only used it at this point because we didn't think they were needed or appropriate at any other points.

Selection of content;
Our finished work doesn't show we can choose appropriate costume because no particular costume was really needed other then a hoody for Joe but it does show we can choose props and make up as we have a knife for the weapon and when Chris is dead in the bath he has white face make up and dark eyes and blood everywhere, which fits in with the story line and makes since for his character. We chose appropriate location for the film as we used a house and the story was about a girl babysitting when she find her boyfriend dead in a bathroom so we couldn't of filmed outside. We chose good actors for our film because they were sensible and patient so we could get the filming done in our own time, this helped because it was our first big bit of filming we did so we needed to take our time to get all the shots correct.

Self assessment;
As Joe did the majority of planning, getting actors and drawing out a story board and time line, I did the majority of filming and did all the camera work, me and Joe both sorted costume together because we both made the fake blood and helped each other in all area's, I also chose the location (my house). The improvements we could of made to the finished film was to make sure nothing was in the background of the shots, eg camera bag. Also we should have planned the time of filming because it was set at night and we had all the lights off but there was light coming in from the windows which didn't make sence to the story. All I would do differently for the final film if pick an appropriate time for filming our final work.

Half term homework assignment (Joe)

Use of the cameraOur finished work shows that i am able to hold a shot steady as 5 seconds in, the camera pans and it is a steady pan and doesn't shake. I also believe it shows that I am able to use a wide variety of shot types, as throughout the video we used different shots. For example; 10 seconds in there is a closeup; 16 seconds there is a midshot; 27 seconds there is an over the shoulder shot. I also believe that there is a good use of composition techniques as when it is closeups of people's faces, their face is the main focus of the shot and nothing is distracting you from it.

Use of editing

I think that the final edit of the work shows that we can apply the rules of continuity quite well as when you watch it, it all flows together and there isn't anything that jumps or skips out little bits. As well, I think that we show we can use editing transitions appropriately to make it flow even more because at 25 seconds we faded one shot out and another in because before these shots didn't flow very well at all.

Selection of Content
I think that we did well with the selection of content because the makeup, props and costumes fit in well with the genre, and are also almost exactly the same as the content used in the original film that we were remaking.

Self Assessment
I contributed to the planning, filming and editing of the film. for the planning of the film, i got people in to do the acting in our film and also drew out the storyboard for the whole of the film, giving each shot a certain time limit so that when it came to filming we could be more precise. For the filming i was involved in the acting of the film and also helped abby with the camerawork in the parts that i wasnt acting in. I also got a few things needed for the costume of the guy in the bath (t-shirt).

To improve the film and also to take note of for when it comes to making the final coursework i think we should focus on making sure that we notice little things when filming rather than when editing. In the film, there is one point where you can see the camera bag in the background. and also, the lighting is not right as some points its dark as if it is night but then others there's daylight. I also think we should do each shot a few times over to make sure we can pick the best rather than just having one for each shot.

Hello. Here is mine and Abby's remake of the student slasher film. Our finished remake of the film has turned out quite well, but we do know that there were a few problems that we faced during filming it. One of these problems was; the film was set at night but we filmed during the day so light was seen coming in from the windows. Another problem we had was the fact that we had left our camera bag in another room that was in view in the shot. One good thing about our film is that it is almost exactly the same as the one we were remaking.

Bye.

Composition exercise

Today we did a composition exercise, this means we had to story board what we were going to do ourselves instead of being shown what to do. Then we had to go out and film our shots then edit them together.
One thing me and Joe did well as a group was to plan a large variety of shots so when we were editing we had a master shot and a lot of different shots to choose from (close ups and panning).
One thing we could of done better was try to make the shots flow so that when we edit them, they fit and make sense together. When we came to edit, our actor was walking at the end of one shot and running at the begining of the other, so the continuity was a little bit off.

continuity exercise

This is our continuity video. We think it went well and we made it flow effectively. To make it better we could of added effects between shots to make them choppy. Overall we are happy with the outcome of our time filming.

Make Up test shots

The first two pictures we took were of Joe with no make up or fake blood on to see what he looked like in the normal lighting. Then we took photos at the location with the make up and fake blood on to see what he would look like in the shot. The make up and fake blood worked in our opinion as it made him fit in well with the genre of film (slasher).

Slasher re-make.

Above is the link to the student slasher film we are going to re-make for AS media. We are going to re-make the last 40 seconds of the film. This starts at 1:40 and ends 2:20. We chose to do this part of the film as we thought it was the most important/interesting part of the film. We chose to do the slasher as we were both interested in doing this genre of horror film for our coursework.
